Cassius Marcellus Coolidge was born on September 18, 1844 in Antwerp, New York. Growing up as a farmer, he was largely a self-taught artist. Coolidge nevertheless cemented a permanent place in American popular culture with his paintings commissioned by advertising firm Brown & Bigelow in the early 1900s which featured anthropomorphic dogs (who were often seen playing poker). Coolidge died in 1934 and is buried at Hillside Cemetery in Antwerp. His famous paintings carry on his legacy.
